Nuclear power-producing countries

While nuclear energy is not used in all countries, it is used in plenty. Many use it for research, a ton for medical uses. In this post, all countries currently using nuclear energy for electricity will be mentioned, as well as all their NPPs by name, excluding any decommissioned and cancelled ones. There will be no story provided about the NPPs, this is simply a list. Any country with no current operating NPPs, even if they are under construction, will not be mentioned. The countries are in alphabetical order. For anyone wishing to see a map of all NPPs, there is an interactive worldwide map of them, where you can find much information about specific NPPs. Argentina:

10% of Argentina's electricty comes from nuclear energy. It has three NPPs, two of which belong to the same complex, Atucha 1 and 2, and the other one is Embalse (pictured below). The country has in total one operating CANDU, two operating PHWR reactors, and a PWR under construction.


Armenia:

38% of Armenia's power comes from nuclear energy. It only has one NPP, Metsamor, which is also often referred to as Armenian. Only its second reactor is operational, which is a VVER-440.



Belarus:

Belarus only has one NPP, the Astravets/Belarussian NPP, which has a total capacity of 2400MW. It has two operational VVER-1200.



Belgium:

In 2016, 51,3% of the country's electricity was produced by nuclear energy. Belgium has two operational PWR reactors, one in Doel NPP and the other in Tihange NPP (pictured below).



Brazil:

3% of the country's electricity comes from nuclear energy from the Angra NPP, the only one of the country, which has two operational PWR reactors.



Bulgaria:

A third of Bulgaria's electricity is produced by nuclear energy. The only operational reactors are two VVER-1000 belonging to Kozloduy NPP.



Canada:

In 2023, 13% of the country's electricity was produced by nuclear energy. Canada has four NPPs with operational reactors: Pickering NPP (four CANDU), Darlington NPP (four CANDU and pictured below), Bruce NPP (eight CANDU), and Point Lepreau NPP (one CANDU).



China:

China has the second largest fleet of NPPs worldwide and its 63 reactors have a net capacity of 62,409 GWe (gigawatts electrical). China's NPPs with operational reactors are Changjiang (two PWRs), Daya Bay (two PWRs and pictured below), Fangchenggang (four PWRs), Fangjiashan (two PWRs), Fuqing (six PWRs), Haiyang (two PWRs), Hongyanhe (six PWRs), Ling Ao (four PWRs), Ningde (four PWRs), Qinshan (reactor complex, 1 has a PWR, 2 has four PWRs, 3 has two CANDU), San'ao (one PWR), Sanmen (two PWRs), Shidaowan (reactor complex, operational reactors are a HTGR -High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor- in 1, and two PWRs in 2), Taipingling (two PWRs), Taishan (two PWRs), Tianwan (four VVER-1000, two PWRs), Yangjiang (six operational PWRs).



Czech Republic:

In 2019, it was planned that nuclear electricity would account to 58% of the Czech electricity production. It has two NPPs, Dukovany (four VVER-440), and Temelín (two VVER-1000 and pictured below).



Finland:

In 2024, 40% of the country's electricity came from nuclear energy. Finland has two operational NPPs, Loviisa (two VVER-440 and pictured below), and Olkiluoto (two BWR, one PWR).



France:

Ever since the 1980s, nuclear energy has been the largest source of electricity in France. France has operational reactors in the following NPPs: Belleville (two PWRs and pictured below), Blayais (four PWRs), Bugey (four PWRs), Cattenom (four PWRs), Chinon (four PWRs), Chooz (two PWRs), Civaux (two PWRs), Cruas (four PWRs), Dampierre (four PWRs), Flamanville (three PWRs), Golfech (two PWRs), Gravelines (six PWRs), Nogent (two PWRs), Paluel (four PWRs), Penly (two PWRs), Saint-Alban (two PWRs), Saint-Laurent (two PWRs), Tricastin (four PWRs).



Hungary:

In 2014 nuclear energy accounted for 53% of Hungary's energy production. The only NPP in the country is Paks NPP, with four operating VVER-440.



India:

Around 3% of India's electricity comes from nuclear power. India has been making advances in the field of thorium based fuel. The NPPs with operational reactors are: Kaiga (three PHWRs and pictured below). Kakrapar (four PHWRs), Kudankulam (two VVER-1000), Madras (a PHWR and a breeder reactor), Narora (two PHWRs), Rajasthan (one CANDU, five PHWRs), Tarapur (two BWRs, two PHWRs).



Iran:

Iran only has one operating reactor, a VVER-1000 in the Bushehr NPP.



Japan:

Japan is gradually returning to nuclear energy, with at least thirty three reactors returning to the grid by 2030. The operational reactors belong to the NPPs Genkai (two PWRs), Ikata (one PWR), Kashiwazaki-Kariwa (one BWR, pictured below), Mihama (one PWR), Ōi/Oi/Ohi (two PWRs), Onagawa (one BWR), Sendai (two PWRs), Shimane (one BWR), Takahama (four PWRs).



Mexico:

Mexico has only one NPP, the Laguna Verde NPP, which has two operational BWRs and accounts for 4.8% of the country's electricity.



Netherlands:

In 2011, nuclear energy accounted for 4% of the country's electricity. The one operational nuclear reactor belongs to Borssele NPP, a PWR.



Pakistan:

By 2050, the country plans to construct 32 commercial NPPs to account for 25% of the country's electricity production. There are two NPPs, Chashma (four operational PWRs) and Karachi (two operational PWRs and pictured below).



Romania:

Nuclear energy accounts for 20% of the country's electrical production. The only NPP of Romania is in Cernavodă, with two operational CANDU.



Russia:

In 2020, nuclear energy accounted for 20.28% of all electricity generated. The operational reactors of Russia belong to the following NPPs: Balakovo (four VVER-1000), Beloyarsk (two SFRs -Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors-), Kalinin (four VVER-1000), Kola (four VVER-440), Kursk (two RBMK-1000), Kursk 2 (one VVER-TOI), Leningrad (two RBMK-1000 and pictured below), Leningrad 2 (two VVER-1200), Novovoronezh (a VVER-440 and a VVER-1000), Novovoronezh 2 (two VVER-1000), Rostov (four VVER-1000), Smolensk (three RBMK-1000), as well as a floating nuclear station on the ship Akademik Lomonosov, which has two PWRs.



Slovakia:

In 2025, nuclear energy accounted for 64% of the electricity produced. Slovakia has two NPPs, Bohunice (two operational VVER-440 and pictured below) and Mochovce (three operational VVER-440).



Slovenia: 

Slovenia only has one NPP in Krško which in 2019 accounted for 36,2% of Slovenia's electricity, and has an operational PWR.



South Africa:

South Africa is the only African country with an NPP, Koeberg, which accounts for 5% of the country's electricity generation and has two operational PWRs.



South Korea:

Nuclear energy accounts for 30% of the country's electricity generation. The operational reactors of South Korea belong to the following NPPs: Hanbit (six PWRs), Hanul (six PWRs), Shin-Hanul (two PWRs), Kori (three PWRs and pictured below), Shin-Kori (two PWRs), Saeul (two PWRs), Wolsong (three CANDU), Shin-Wolsong (two PWRs).



Spain:

20% of the country's electricity in 2023 was produced by nuclear energy. The following NPPs have all the country's operating reactors: Almaraz (two PWRs), Ascó (two PWRs), Cofrentes (one BWR), Trillo (one PWR), Vandellòs (one PWR and pictured below).



Sweden:

30% of the country's electricity is produced by nuclear energy. The following NPPs have all the country's operating reactors: Forsmark (three BWRs and pictured below), Oskarshamn (one BWR), Ringhals (two PWRs).



Switzerland:

Since 1985, nuclear energy has accounted for around 40% of the country's electricity production, with three NPPs with operational reactors, Beznau (two PWRs), Gösgen (one PWR), and Leibstadt (one BWR and pictured below).



Ukraine:

Most of Ukraine's electricity comes from nuclear energy and its reactors' total capacity is over 13 GWe. The operational reactors of the country belong to the following NPPs: Khmelnytskyi (two VVER-1000), Rivne (two VVER-440 and two VVER-1000), South Ukraine (three VVER-1000), Zaporizhzhia (six VVER-1000 and pictured below).



United Arab Emirates:

The only NPP there is the Barakah NPP, which accounts for 25% of the country's produced electricity and has four PWRs.



United Kingdom:

In 2020, nuclear energy accounted for 16,1% of the electricity generated. The operational reactors belong to Hartlepool NPP (two AGRs), Heysham (reactor complex, both 1 and 2 have two AGRs), Sizewell B (a PWR and pictured below), Torness (two AGRs).




United States:

Largest producer of commercial nuclear power, in 2013 it generated 33% of the world's nuclear energy and in 2024 nuclear energy accounted for 18,6% of the nation's electricity. The operational reactors belong to the following NPPs: Arkansas Nuclear One (two PWRs), Beaver Valley (two PWRs), Braidwood (two PWRs), Browns Ferry (three BWRs), Brunswick (two BWRs), Byron (two PWRs), Callaway (a PWR), Calvert Cliffs (two PWRs), Catawba (two PWRs), Clinton (a BWR), Columbia (a BWR), Comanche Peak (two PWRs), Cooper (a BWR), Davis-Besse (a PWR), Diablo Canyon (two PWRs), Donald C. Cook (two PWRs), Dresden (two BWRs), Edwin I. Hatch (two BWRs), Fermi (a BWR), Ginna (a PWR), Grand Gulf (a BWR), H.B. Robinson (a PWR), Hope Creek (a BWR), James A. FitzPatrick (a BWR), Joseph M.
